Baby Prep
Our countdown has begun until Baby #2 graces us with their presence. As exciting and wonderful as this time is, it is equally nerve wracking as we try to be as prepared as we can be. This time around is so different, not only because we already have a child to tend to that requires our attention, love and care, but also because while I wouldn’t say we are seasoned parents per say, we are more experienced. If we have learned anything from becoming parents previously, is that we will have to go with the flow and learn and adapt as things come up.
There are some factors in which we can be prepared for Baby’s arrival though. Some may seem more overkill than others, but these are things that have worked for us.
Freezer Meal Preparation – As previously discussed in Freezer Meal Prep, having a freezer full of prepared meals available can make all the difference in the first few weeks after baby’s arrival. One less thing to think about within the hustle and bustle of the early days.
Packing our Hospital Bags – I will be using my own Hospital Bag Checklists for myself and Baby’s packing needs. With the end drawing nearer, it is best to have these bags packed and ready to grab and go. Minor everyday use items are okay to pack last minute, but maintain a list so nothing is forgotten in a panicked dash.
Nursery Prep – Get all things newborn ready and aligned the way you’d like it to make things as easy as possibly when Baby is here. This way you will know where everything is and it will all be easily accessible when needed.
Older Children Transitions – We had to transition our son from the nursery to his big boy room prior to Baby arriving. This can be challenging for all, as it is a new space and can be confusing for younger children. Allowing anywhere from 2 weeks to a month ahead can provide the adjustment period to take place. The last thing you want is poor sleeping patterns from your older children and a newborn schedule happening all at once.
Cleaning, Sterilizing and Sanitizing – Is there a task you have been putting off but deep down inside has been driving you nuts? Get it done. Nesting is a beautiful thing. Take advantage and tackle all those pesky tasks you have been wanting to get to. Anything you can picture staring at while holding a sleeping baby or while feeding that will eat you alive, do it now while you have that moment. Also, sterilizing everything for the newborn and sanitizing your home in preparation for this helpless little creature, as much as possible, can make bringing them home feel safe and a little more carefree.
Postpartum Prep – You are just as important Mama, so prepare to take care of yourself too. Have your sanitary pads, liquids and all ready and organized for yourself. The last thing you want is to be rummaging around in search of these needed and essential items while you hear your newborn starting to fuss. You are going to be pulled in so many different directions, especially if you have other children, preparing to put your needs in check is a key to efficiency.
While we can’t be perfect and other needs and requirements will quite likely come up after Baby arrives, having these basic things prepped can make all the difference. Do what works for you. Try not to get overwhelmed or stressed at it all, this is to help you, not hinder you. If a task feels too daunting, ask for help. You will be amazed at what others are willing to do to make you feel more comfortable and calm while preparing for Baby and even afterwards. While we would all like to appear to be Wonder Woman who can do it all, realistically, we sometimes need to check ourselves and accept when we can’t. There is absolutely nothing wrong with accepting assistance. And you will thank yourself later for being more prepared, even if it was over the top, versus not prepared at all.
