Micro Habits for a Calmer Home
We can all use a little more calmness in our lives, regardless of what stage you are at or season you may be in. Life is full of enough madness and rushing around, that allowing ourselves a little more peace with micro habits can make all the difference.
Here are a few ideas that can help create calm in your everyday.
- Make the bed as soon as you get up in the morning.
- Open the curtains first thing in the morning.
- Clear at least one surface if you can’t tackle the whole room.
- Put shoes away as soon as you come home.
- Light a candle while you tidy.
- Do a 5-minute reset before bed.
- Wipe the kitchen sink after use.
- Keep containers mostly clear to see the contents inside.
- Put things back where they belong, as boring as this may be.
- Take one item with you when leaving a room.
- Empty the garbage or recycling bin before it overflows.
- Fold blankets instead of leaving them draped.
- Put laundry straight into the basket.
- Tidy while waiting for the microwave or for the kettle to boil.
- Keep a cloth nearby for quick wipes.
- Sort mail the day it arrives.
- Rinse dishes right after usage.
- Keep keys in one consistent spot.
- Do a “5 things” tidy when things start to feel cluttered.
- Clear the dining table and counters after every meal.
- Put away clutter at the end of each day to start fresh the next morning.
- Open a window for fresh air.
- Put chargers away when not in use.
- Tidy the bathroom counters and sink every night.
- Keep fewer items on display.
- Maintain the floors in high traffic areas.
- Keep cleaning products where you use them or keep a caddy.
- Reset the kitchen before relaxing.
- Put cushions and throw blankets back at the end of each day.
- Wipe mirrors when you notice smudges.
- Let go of “I’ll do it later”.
- Stop aiming for perfect, calm is enough.
These are all just suggestions, but very quick and easy ones to create the calm in your day so there feels like there is less to do on your already busy to-do lists. Once something becomes a habit, it is less likely to feel like a chore and more of the flow of the day. Pick one of these to start with and then add one a week to build up to a structure within your every day that works best for you. It can be that simple!
