Renewing Your Health After Sickness

There is nothing quite like getting sick to make you appreciate your health. All we can think about when we are not well is getting healthy again and how grateful we will be to have our health back. Yet we very quickly move on and forget how awful it really was once we are better, until the next time we have to live through it.

We take our health and daily habits for granted, until we cannot preform them as we normally would, if at all. I always say, it should be illegal for Mothers to get sick because we still have to find a way to function through it. Our kids still need us, we still have to feed them, clothe them and do somewhat of their regular routines. It makes us never want to get sick again.

The common cold and flu, heck even Covid, have become a part of life. While preventable, it is sometimes inevitable to happen. Our kids don’t understand personal space with friends, they touch all of the same surfaces and toys, babies put everything into their mouths, its a constant battle to keep the germs at bay.

Here are a few things to consider doing once the house is finally feeling better, to not only prevent the spread of the illness yet again, but to avoid anyone else catching it whom you may come into contact with.

  • Change the sheets. Once everyone is starting to feel better, change the sheets for a fresh start at good nights sleeps.
  • Change your toothbrush or toothbrush head. These go into our mouths, where we are most vulnerable. Save yourself the worry of it housing the illness within itself.
  • Sanitize anything with high traffic touching. Door knobs, remotes, light switches, phones, the refrigerator door, railings, cupboards, anything you may have touched, give it a wipe.
  • Sanitize your source of water. It is important to stay hydrated when you are unwell, so make sure the sources of your hydration have been disinfected. Meaning the faucet handles, Brita jug handle, or the push button on the fridge where the water is dispensed. Even when these things are hands free, you’ve been drinking from the same cup with your sickness and germs and this is just asking to be shared with the whole household if not attended to.
  • Open all the windows. Harder to do in the winter, I get it, but even for 5 minutes, it is amazing what some fresh air can do.
  • Run an air purifier. These have come down in price significantly over recent years and are a great way to give a room a refresh.
  • Wash your hands. This should go without saying, and yet again has become a lost art of our daily practice, but this is so important to keep doing at all times.

What are some of your tips and tricks to renewing your health after sickness within your family? If it spreads through the house or fixates on one family member, illness is never fun to deal with. Preventing it from spreading or from coming back is so important. While not always successful, it does not hurt to try. Cleaning our homes and sanitizing high traffic areas, asking guests to wash their hands upon arrival or not to come if they are not well, these are all things that are commendable and should be respected. Your health is so important, we should really try to appreciate it on a daily basis. So if and when we do get sick, while desperate to get our health back, is hopefully less of a desire, and closer than it seems.
