Quick Whole House Declutter

Decluttering can seem like a huge task to accomplish when looking at the entire home and all of your possessions, but it doesn’t have to be. This also doesn’t have to be a massive purge of all you own. This can be a soft edit of what you have and at the very least, removing items from surfaces that cause clutter and chaos.

Let’s break this down, room by room, shall we?

Bedroom/Closet:

  • Remove clothes that have not been worn in 12 months. This is the one-year rule, if you haven’t worn it, let it go.
  • Toss any single socks or torn items.
  • Store seasonal clothes seperately.
  • Clear the nightstands – keep only a lamp, a book and essentials you use regularly.
  • Donate duplicates or excessive blankets and pillows, both useful and decorative.

Kids Rooms/Playroom:

  • Remove broken toys, damaged books or puzzles with missing pieces.
  • Consider a toy rotation to remove too many options.
  • Create one basket per category; blocks, cars, dolls, animals, etc.

Bathrooms:

  • Throw away expired medications and old skincare.
  • Toss hotel minis, empty bottles, old makeup, samples.
  • Organize hair tools into one space that can be tucked away.
  • Keep the counters clear, essentials only.

Living Room:

  • Clear all surfaces; coffee table or side tables, TV console, shelves.
  • Remove old magazines, any excessive décor.
  • Use the rule-of-3 for décor on surfaces. 3 per surface, no more.
  • Designate a basket for remotes and chargers.

Kitchen:

  • Toss any and all expired food, condiments or sauces.
  • Remove duplicate or damaged utensils.
  • Only keep containers with their matching lids.
  • Create a snack basket, or a coffee and tea station.

Laundry Room:

  • Only keep the products you use on a regular basis.

Home Office:

  • Recycle old papers you no longer need.
  • Limit stationary to essentials.
  • Organize cables with clips.
  • Do a digital declutter; delete files, clean up desktop, organize photos, etc.

Car:

  • Remove garbage, old receipts, unused or damaged chargers.
  • Keep items like tissues, sanitizer, mints or gum and emergency tools.

Keep it simple, keep it tidy. To make matters quick and put your mind at ease, don’t over complicate it. If you can’t make a fast decision on keeping an item or tossing it, make sure it has a home and revisit when you find another moment or the next time things start to get out of hand and need a decluttering. Casual declutters are equally as effective as a big purge. A clear space creates a clear mind, you deserve to feel at ease in your own home.
